ENTER the village hall at Hurst Green this weekend and you
could be forgiven for thinking that you’d left this world altogether and
entered a new one – you have- it’s
hosting the Middle Earth Beer Festival 2013 and it feels like something else.
Ales in abundance, grown men dressed as hobbits, live
performers, crafts and the feel of magic in the air or at least beer fueled
merriment and eye twinkling. It’s a big do for a small place and a long way
from the rural stereotype of whist drives and sparsely attended aerobics
classes. Folk rock, mandolins and a crowded beer hall have arrived in their place.
One thing’s for certain, with a craft fair, at least a dozen
acoustic acts all Saturday and Sunday afternoon, up to 40 real ales to sup from
and full gigs each evening, it’s not a bad way to spend a weekend. You can
wander through the buzzing crowd, forget about the hustle and bustle and give
it all a rest for a while.
“All we have to do is to decide what to do with the time
that has been given to us,” as Gandalf might say or in fact did say in Lord of
the Rings in a conversation with Frodo the ring bearer. He wasn’t talking about
which gig to watch or beer to drink but you get the point.
Personally at the opening gig last night I went straight for
the most plain and urban looking labelled Manchester Bitter and loved it. But I
am a proud townie from Bolton and enjoy living in Preston so I would. Though
for me it had the classic “goes down easy and wipes the floor with the rest”
taste of a good northern bitter, that you seek out in an old milltown from birth.
It proves that there is something for
everyone at the festival.
Elvish Ale, Golden Pippin, Jorvik, Moonshine, the names give
it away and I named three out of 40. Online they look beautiful in real life
they taste better and you need to try them for yourself. Though don’t blame me
if you trip up on the way out.
It’s running from the morning to teatime Saturday and Sunday
two quid in, constant live music and a craft marquee full of goodies and people
to chat with. The evening events are ticketed. Click on the link for further
details. Good luck.http://www.middleearthbeerfestival.co.uk/beer.html
